The human rights organization Verita World Foundation has been helping people who have to flee their home country since its foundation. The reason for forced immigration is most often a violation of the rights and freedoms of a citizen, a person, a Human – we forget that everyone from birth deserves to write that word with a capital letter! To restore justice and protect human rights is the task of our foundation.
For example, the US has worked tirelessly to defend the universality and rule of human rights. The fight for these rights is one of the founding principles of the United States of America and is at the core of its foreign policy. The US priority is to rebuild the legal space for the protection of human rights.
Mission
We are committed to the rule of law, to an international system that promotes human freedoms and security. And this is the only possible tribute we pay to those who created the Universal Declaration of Human Rights nearly 75 years ago. We firmly believe in the importance of the rule of law and the international system for promoting human freedoms and security. We understand that these two elements are essential to ensure a just and secure society for all.
We recognize that respect for the rule of law is essential to preserve fundamental civil liberties, protect human rights and promote democratic values. An international system that promotes human freedoms and security is essential to maintain peace and stability in the world.
We strive to help those in need and highlight human rights abuses; we provide access to resources such as legal advice; we support civil liberties organizations; and we are committed to responsible business practices that respect human rights in all our activities.
People are fleeing the dictatorship
Unfortunately, wars and dictatorships have migrated into the 21st century. The war in Ukraine and the repressions in Russia and Belarus have triggered the biggest wave of immigration in 100 years. In Russia alone, more than 700 laws have been passed from the beginning of last year to the present day, the vast majority of which are openly repressive.
Infringement of human rights
Human rights activities have been virtually eliminated in the country. On September 16, 2022, Russia definitively withdrew from the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights. This means that anyone who encounters the arbitrariness of Russian justice can no longer rely on the protection of the European Court of Human Rights.
Wave of immigration
The Memorial Society has been abolished. Against a background of infringement of basic rights and freedoms, persecution for dissent – one in ten Russians is thinking about emigration, according to a recent Levada Center poll. And in the current climate this trend will only increase.
Russia’s announced annexation of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions of Ukraine is exacerbating the conflict and related human rights violations. The Russian Federation’s widespread armed invasion of Ukraine has resulted in a dire human rights situation throughout the country. Ukrainians have experienced untold suffering and deprivation. The armed conflict has resulted in a number of violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.
As the fighting continues, there are disturbing reports of human rights and international humanitarian law violations in the context of both civilian and prisoner of war detention. There continue to be horrific reports of torture and ill-treatment of both civilians and prisoners of war.
